World and British indoor rowing records fall at BRIC 2024

One World record has been provisionally broken and 23 further British records were shattered during the racing at the British Rowing Indoor Championships 2024.

Once again hosted at FitFest, BRIC welcomed nearly 1800 competitors to Birmingham to participate in this year’s championships.

The new world record came in the PR1 Women’s One Minute. Jess Dowdeswell not only took gold but also set a new world and British record in the process. This was one of many new indoor rowing records set in the adaptive categories, particularly the one minute events.

Stephen Montague set a new British record in the PR1 Open one minute while Graham Burns and Daniela Cachia triumphed and shattered previous records in their respective PR2 one minute events.

Across the longer four minute events, several more adaptive records fell. The Year 8 and Year 9 PR3 records provisionally fell to Adam Hussain and Graham Mcclelland respectively, while the Year Girls record has been claimed by Alba Robins.

Success continued for our younger athletes with new British  indoor rowing records provisionally being set in the Sixth Form Girls PR3 category by Eimear Slee and by
Gabriel Phillips Rusenieks on the Boys’ side of things.

These golden moments were continued into the senior racing with a new British record coming in the PR1 Women's 2000m from Georgia Carmichael while Burns and Cachia both left with two records after storming to victory in the 2000m event as well as their 500m pieces.

Speaking of 2000m racing, Ben Gallagher struck gold in the PR3 Open 2000m. Just like those who have been mentioned already, Gallagher would also set a new British record in the process.

There were also plenty of records toppling in the Masters categories. Over 2000m, Hazel Perkins shaved just over four minutes off the previous 85-89 Women's previous record. Across the lightweight events, records fell to Justine Reston, Fiona Jamie, and Rob Stewart in the 55-59 Women's LightWeight, 65-69 Women’s Lightweight, and 70-74 Open Lightweight events.

Not to be outdone, Marcus Harvey knocked over two seconds off the previous 65-69 Open 2000m British indoor rowing record.

The Masters were still at it in the 500m. New British records were provisionally set in the 75-79b Open category by Peter Summers while the Women’s event was won by Bett Osborne.

Across the rest of the day, there were some blistering times. The fastest athletes of the day came on the Open and Women’s 2000m. The Open event was won by Josh Knight in a time of 5:47.5 beating the field of GB Rowing Team Athletes. Olympic Champion Lauren Henry would win the Women’s 2000m by nearly three seconds in 6:40.9.

Over 500m, Thomas Wilson would win the Open event by two seconds in a time of 1:13.2 ahead of Chris Scott while Vár Guriardóttir Hansen would win the women's event by nearly four seconds in a rapid 1:30.8.
