Phil Clapp has set a new indoor rowing world Record over 500m on the Concept 2 rowing machine.

The current British Champion snuck under the 1:10 barrier to record a time of 1:09.8, averaging 49 strokes per minute.

Over the 500m piece, Clapp averaged 1000 Watts and had a peak power output of 1340 Watts.

Clapp has been dominant for years on the rowing machine, having won the Open 500m at the World Championships every year between 2020 and 2023.

At the recent British Rowing Indoor Championships, Clapp came away with the gold medal after winning in a time of 1:12.0.

Speaking with Concept 2, Clapp emphasised how important the 500m distance was to him.

“I have basically been targeting the 500m for ten years in some form or shape. Quite a frightening thought! Selfishly, because that’s what I’m good at. I enjoy the short, powerful training which combines strength work in the gym and hard lactate sessions on the erg,” said the World Record Holder.

“In all honesty I try not to think about it too much. I have the knowledge that if I’ve performed the training correctly then I will do my best performance in whatever shape that takes.”

“I don’t like losing and I enjoy the journey of pushing to see what my body is capable of.”

A current holder of the 20-29 one minute record, Clapp's goal is something longer. He has previously equalled the 1000m record but now he'd like to train and add that to his envious collection of records.
